Kimi to Boku Episode 1 – Initial Impressions

Kimi to Boku  – Episode 1

ボクらの17回目の春に – Our 17th spring

.Synopsis.
Kimi to Boku is a story of four boys: Yuuki and Yuta Asaba, Kaname Tsukahara, and Shun Matsuokan who have all grown up together. The main cast is expanded by the addition of a half-Japanese transfer student by the name of Chizuru Tachibana. The first episode focuses around four of the main characters , who are entering their 17th spring together. Kaname Tsukahara is trying to get one of the twins to join a club other than the “Going Home Club.”

.Initial Impressions.
Kimi to Boku is a slice of life anime in the purest sense. The best comparison I can draw to a similar anime would be somewhere along the lines of “Toned-down Lucky Star with male leads.” While the cast is a little static, and you often wonder what the point of a scene is, you also realize the episode is over without you realizing it. With that said, it seems the stories may be episodic, with no real romantic interests, which is alright with me. It also appears that each episode will feature character building flashbacks, which will be a nice alternative to entire episodes based on a flashback.

The animation for Kimi to Boku, while not mind blowing and eye opening, is exactly what it needs to be- Pretty and clean to look at. The characters are interesting to look at (though I do believe Shun is in serious need of a haircut, which he appears to get in the future.) and the background is filled with beautiful, fluttering cherry blossoms which really set the pace for the show. The opening “Bye Bye” by 7!! Is pretty catchy, while the ending Nakimushi (Crybaby) by Miku Sawai leaves you with a sustaining feeling of relaxation that will most likely carry over from the endings of the episodes. The stories, while funny and warm, could use some more interesting takes than the moderately cliché turns they have been taking. (Ah yes, he is actually incredibly good at sports.) Nitpicking aside, the first episode was enjoyable, and the quality that is put into the show is also high.

.Episode Preview.

It looks like next episode we get to see our first female cast member introduced. Shun still hasn’t gotten his hair cut, but it seems that the episode will be focusing on him. It also looks like we won’t be seeing Chizuru in the next episode.
