Kimi to Boku – Episode 2

Kimi to Boku  – Episode 2

チューリップの咲いた日 – The day the tulips bloomed

.Synopsis.
The episode starts off with the boys playing a game of soccer, almost taking out a row of tulips in the process. When the ball narrowly avoids the tulips, we see Shun is rather relieved.

More importantly, the plot of the episode picks up when Kaname and the twins go on the search for a pair of chopsticks, leaving Shun by himself to wait for them on the roof of the building. While waiting, a first year student runs out onto the roof, her face close to tears. Shun starts to give her a band-aid, which only aggravates the girl, causing her to run away. He follows the girl until he finally catches up to her, and gives her a band-aid for her scraped knee. Upon returning to the roof, he has found his friends have started lunch without him.

The boys get ready to depart school, only for Shun to find a “fortune” letter in his shoe locker. As it turns out, he is supposedly going to be cursed with horrible luck. The confusion as to who left the note in his locker does not last long as the gang spots the girl Shun helped hiding behind a bulletin board. Over the course of the next few days, Shun is the victim of several pranks pulled by the girl. Trying to figure out what he could have possibly done to aggravate the girl, Shun and his friends go to watch the girl from the roof. They discover the girl doesn’t like asking for help from anyone, and is quick to temper when offered assistance.

Shun’s character develops thought the episode with a flashback to the past while talking to Yuta about Tulips. It seems in the past Shun was trying to dig the snow off of everyone’s potted tulips in school because he wanted them to be able to bloom in spring. Little did he know that tulips are able to survive winter.

The teasing from the girl hits a boiling point when a rock aimed at Shun’s head accidentally hits Yuta’s head instead, causing him to bleed. Shun pursues the girl and finally catches her and takes her down asks her why she has been targeting him, and what he could have done to provoke her rage. As it turns out, she doesn’t like asking for help, just as the group suspected- and with a little snooping from Yuta, they discover the girl is still wearing the band-aid. The girl opens up to Shun, and tells him her name- Sato Masaki. Yuta looks at Shun, and mentions to himself that all of Shun’s hard work isn’t for nothing, with which the episode ends.

.Initial Impressions.

It looks like we have gained another character to the cast list. I have to say, even though Masaki opens up near the end of the episode, I would have really appreciated a nice slap across the face. Playing pranks is annoying, but throwing rocks? That’s a little ridiculous. Anyhow the boys let her off with a nice warning, and get her to open up at the same time. It just goes to show kindness is the fastest way to someone’s heart. (Though food and cats might be a quick second.)

While I am still trying to give Kimi to Boku time to develop, I often find it a little hard to focus as the shows slow pacing and rather dry jokes can tend to get a little boring. With that said, the episode really picks up in the last 8 or so minutes. While that might seem a little silly, the last scenes are done really well, and it the music really helps set a mood. With that said, the music in Kimi to Boku is definitely a strong point. Often while trying to maintain interest in the first half of the episode I found myself relaxing to the music that was playing in the background.  At the risk of sounding a little critical, I really do hope things become a little more quickly paced, because even for a slice of life the show is a little slow.

.Episode Preview.

It looks like next week we finally get to meet the last of the boys. After watching the opening, it seems he has the most personality- which might just provide the spice the show needs.
