Un-go – Episode 7

Daydream

.Synopsis.

We pick up where we left off in the previous episode. Shinjurou is speaking to the “novelist” in a prison visiting area. The novelist tells him that he must reveal the truth. Shinjurou begins to feel strange, his vision is distorted and he starts to stumble out of the room. He opens the door and finds himself in some strange place.

Shinjurou looks up and sees planes overhead, and it reminds him of the war. The darkness surrounding him lifts and the planes are attached to the ceiling by strings. He is suddenly on a movie set. An actress addresses him, saying the director is calling for him. Shinjurou plays along and follows her. He meets two other lead actresses, then the director calls for the next scene to start. Shinjurou checks on their make up and begins to work the camera. The plot of the movie is that three girls escaped the war and were taken in by a man who suddenly disappeared. Now they roam what’s left of the burning town. So they shoot the next scene and the girls are watching the replay.

Shinjurou begins to ponder why he has to solve a mystery when no crime has been committed. The girls are reflecting on the plot, one of them saying there is no escaping war. Another says that there is no war and that’s why it’s alright to make a movie about it. The third asks Shinjurou if they can do a re-take of the scene. The director comes over to them, and Shinjurou asks him for the re-take, but the director punches him and tells him not to speak to the girls or he’ll kill him.

Shinjurou is walking down a corridor, unaware of where he is. He remembers he’s going to talk to the director about the script, and that there’s a mystery here. He has a feeling there is something off about the script. He sees the director hassling one of the girls through a partially opened garage type door. He can only see them from their shins down, but it’s obvious. The girl leaves and the director crawls through the bottom of the door. Shinjurou asks him what he was doing, but the director tells him it’s none of his business and pushes him aside.

The next day Shinjurou is on a computer in a library. He clicks out of clip he’s watching and sees an article with Rinroku Kaishou’s picture on the bottom right. The screen suddenly turns to a matrix like animation full of japanese characters. It dissolves into two remaining characters, Mamori and Kaze. He then hears his name called. He takes off his headphones and looks around to find no one. He shakes it off and approaches the director who is also there. He starts to talk about the night before but someone interrupts and pulls the director away. Shinjurou notices two pieces of paper sticking out of the shelf in between a section of DVDs that the director was standing in front of. He wonders if this is also part of the mystery.

Everyone continues shooting scenes. They take a lunch break, where Shinjurou notices on of the actresses is crying. He goes up to them asks what’s wrong, and they start to go on about the script. The script is unfinished so they went to the director to ask him about some things. They asked him if their characters were going somewhere. The director told them that they were criminals and they can’t go anywhere. This upset them. They begin analyzing lines with Shinjurou. There’s some heartfelt chatter, and Shinjurou comes to the conclusion that he will ask the director about the end, and even write it if he has to. Lunch break ends and they continue shooting. During one scene Shinjurou looks over to his right and notices silhouettes of the novelist and a strange little girl. He blinks and they disappear.

That night, Shinjurou is eating dinner and decides to look through the script, and he finds that the majority of the script is empty. He’s walking down the corridor from before and approaches the director, asking him about the script. Out of nowhere Shinjurou is knocked out. He falls to the floor and there’s a close up of his hand losing grip on blades of grass. He wakes up in his bed. He touches his neck in pain and notices a bar code on the back of it.

He goes outside and sees everyone just standing around. He goes to the girls, one of which is on the ground crying. They tell him the director’s been killed. He looks over at a street car track and the director’s limbs have been cut off like a street car had run him over. Shinjurou knows the street car’s are fake and that it’s only part of the set. Someone in the background says that no one has seen the director since after lunch. Shinjurou comes to the conclusion that he was the last one to see him, and the only one with motive. The motive being that he was angry that the director was going to ruin the movie and waste all of the hard work the girls had put into it. He has either a flashback or it’s just his imagination, but in the flashback he chokes out the director and puts him on the track and a street car magically appears. Shinjurou says aloud that if he gathered clues and deduced who did it, that he would be the only logical culprit. Rie Kaishou and Izumi come up to him, but he doesn’t seem to recognize them. It says on the screen that Rie is with the Metro Police. She then arrests Shinjurou for the murder of the director. The final scene is of the novelist sitting in his cell laughing hysterically.

After the end credits, we see Inga trying to get into the prison asking to see Shinjurou. The guards push him away. Inga goes to ask Kazamori what he should do, but Kazamori has left the body of the doll.

.Impressions.

Lots of weird stuff happening in this episode. I found myself thinking “what’s going on here?” while watching it the first time through. It wasn’t a very good episode, but it was necessary to set up the next one. I have a feeling a lot of details are going to come to light in the continuation. It should be pretty exciting. Until then, I can only speculate on why Shinjurou is in this weird state.

I assume that the novelist is causing all of this with the help of the strange girl that is with him. The girl must have some sort of strange power, similar to Inga. It’s possible that this whole thing is a hallucination, or something along those lines. There are certain things throughout the episode that don’t fit with the illusion. For example, someone calling his name over the computer. I want to believe that it was Kazamori who called his name. Also the blades of grass in his hands when he is knocked out. I feel like he should’ve had the script in that hand. Possibly in the real world he just picked up a bunch of grass where he thought the script was. On top of that, the bar code on Shinjurou’s neck is the same kind we saw on the necks of the inmates in the beginning of the previous episode. We need more information, which we should get in the next episode.

.Episode Preview.

The continuation of this episode, the next episode is called “The King of Paradise”. Looks like the real Rie and Izumi come looking for Shinjurou and go to the novelist for answers. I’m interested to see how this turns out.
